Going from one thing to another is a mentally intense process at the best of times but when you are trying to leap from normal life to writing mode it is overwhelming for your mind.
No. Not at all. Not even for a second.
Your creative mind is a beautiful but very scarce resource. It needs to be protected from harm and coaxed out gently when it is time to create.
That mindset shift required doesn’t have to be hard, in fact, I have a way of doing it that is so easy that you’ll be wondering why you never thought of it yourself.
When you get up in the morning and get ready for work, then you jump in the car and drive to your workplace, enacting a gentle shift of your mindset. You are gearing your brain towards being alert and ready to work.
The same thing happens at the other end, when you finish work you clear your things and head home. You give your mind a physical journey to focus on, which in turn facilitates a mental and emotional journey for your mind. A journey that results in a shift in mindset.
The same principle can be applied to your creative writing.
Before you even think about opening up the laptop or getting out your favourite pen, you need to create some separation between life around you and your creative zone.
I personally like to take a walk around my garden. The change in environment and the continued momentum enables my brain to slowly come round to the idea of pouring out my heart and soul into my writing. I do the same thing at the end of a creative session too, so that I can get myself into the right mindset to be present with my family etc.
Such a simple act creates a really powerful shift in mindset.
When you become aware of this shift and how to force it to happen, its power grows exponentially. It creates a set of self-programmed triggers that can be enacted whenever you need them.
Since implementing separation rituals into my work and life I have found I am more creative, more focused, and the resulting work is of better quality and much more aligned with the intentions in my heart.
